You and your family are having the greatest camping time. The sun is shining brightly, the campground you have chosen is perfect, and the kids are enjoying playing and exploring the nature around. You sit down, relax and watch everyone have a good time. Then suddenly, clouds brew in the sky and the next minute, you are all drenched wet because of a sudden rain that you are not prepared for.

This is a scenario that you do not want to see yourself or your family in. So what do you do to avoid this from happening? Well, you certainly will not be able to do anything to stop a rain but you can do many things to prepare for it.

  • Here are top 5 tips on how to protect yourself from rain:

Tip 1

Check the weather report. Before venturing into the woods, your preparation should include checking the weather forecast and seeing to it that there are no rains or storms that are on their way as you go to your camping destination. Since camping is an outdoor activity, sunshine is a prerequisite for you to be able to do all the camping activities lined up. Rains and storms can easily ruin your trip and prevent you from enjoying the sights around.

Tip 2

Bring rain gear. Even if the weatherman is 100% sure that there will be no rains during the duration of your camping trip, you must still bring the proper kinds of raingear just to be sure. Bring an umbrella, rain poncho and hats just in case a surprise downpour visits your campsite. These things are lightweight and will not take up much space in your luggage anyway. And you can also use the umbrella as a shade to shield yourself from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Tip 3

Invest on good quality tent. It is always recommended that you buy a tent that has weather-resistance feature even though you do not have any plans on camping during the rainy season. This is to ensure that your family is protected and sheltered when inside the tent. This is going to be your home away from home so it is best that you invest on a high quality tent. Coleman tents for example has a feature called WeatherTec system that includes durable frame designs, weather-resistant fabrics, waterproof tub floors with welded corners and seams, protective zipper cuffs, inverted seams, and rain flies with leak-free, taped seams that make these tents ideal whatever weather it is.

Tip 4

Bring enough food and water supplies. Because of the rain, you will not have the chance to find a good source of clean water or pick some fruits to eat. It is best that you have sufficient food and water in your pack.

Tip 5

Have an alternative plan. Being stuck in your tent while the rain is pouring outside gives you nothing to do. And that is not so ideal especially because you and your family have traveled many miles for this trip. Plan indoor games that you can play inside the tent so you will not be totally bored. Games such as pictionary, cards, and scrabble are just few of the many activities you can do while you wait for the rain to stop. Or you can also sing songs or tell each other spooky stories.

Conclusions

  • A rain during a camping trip is not so bad especially if you have prepared carefully for it. What is good about a rain is that it clears the atmosphere and you will see that the sights of Mother Nature are even more beautiful and splendid after a rain.

Dan, camping in the rain always sounded like pure misery. So I began to construct awful looking shelters out of cheap tarps, clothes line, and branches. We wound up spending a totally rainy weekend in the Adirondacks and had a wonderful time. The ugly shelter gave us room to hang out comfortably.
