Preparation

One of the most important and exciting aspects of any backpacking trip is the preparation part. It's so easy to get excited just thinking about the trip but more importantly, you have to prepare properly for it.

  • Get in shape. We all know how physically demanding backpacking can be so it's best that you exercise weeks before the trip so that your body especially your legs and feet will be ready for all the walking and climbing that you will have to do. Try jogging or biking to increase your stamina, build your endurance and improve your strength. You can also try walking many miles around the neighborhood every day.
  • Plan your route, destination and the time frame of your travel. When doing this, it's important to keep in mind your ability as a hiker so that you don't plan a hike that is beyond what you can do.
  • Create a checklist of all the backpacking equipment you need to pack so that you do not forget anything important. Realizing that you forgot your tent when you're already in the campsite and that you have nowhere to sleep can instantly turn the trip into a disaster.

Backpacking Equipment-What to Wear for a Backpacking Trip

What to Wear

What you wear matters. You will realize this if you've worn too heavy clothing under the scorching heat of the sun.

  • Wear running shoes and nylon socks instead of hiking boots and hiking socks. Running shoes are lighter, more comfortable and are less likely to cause blisters on your feet. Once you've tried wearing running shoes for your backpacking trip, chances are you'll never get back to hiking boots ever again.
  • Don a hat. This will help avoid heatstroke as well as sunburn.
  • Wear clothing according to the weather. Before you go backpacking, it's recommended that you first check the weather report so that you know whether you should wear light colored and light material clothing or the opposite.
  • Apply sunscreen. Half hour before the trip, apply sunscreen on your skin. Opt for one that is waterproof and blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
