There is no activity like hiking to bring you closer to the marvels of nature while giving you the much needed physical exercise for your body. Hiking is indeed an enjoyable and worthwhile activity but just like any outdoor activity, it also requires some guidelines that we all should follow in order to have a nice time hiking.

Some important do's and don'ts to keep in mind during hiking are the following:

Do's

  • Keep your focus on the trail. Always remember that a trail is not a smooth and flawless path. It is embedded with rocks, ruts and things that you can easily trip on. This is why, it is a must that you concentrate when walking rather than be busy chatting away. If you want to do some sight seeing, it is a good idea to stop for a while and allow yourself to immerse the beauty of the surroundings. When you resume walking, resume keeping your focus on the trail as well.
  • Know your hiking pace. It is important that you are comfortable with your walking pace. Remember this is not a contest so there is absolutely no need to race with your friends. If you are going to hike in a group, it's best that you place the slowest hiker in front so that nobody gets lost. It is not a shame to be the slowest hiker.
  • Use a walking stick. Walking stick will guide you through your way into the bumpy and rough trail ahead.
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can easily occur if your body loses too much water because of walking and because of the heat of the sun. To avoid this, drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and to replenish lost moisture from your body. Keep your bottle of water in the most accessible part of your backpack.
  • Take regular breaks. It is important to rest occasionally because tired packers are more vulnerable to injuries and accidents. Be sure to include time breaks in your hiking plan so that you will have enough breaks and be able to reach the destination in time.

Don'ts

  • Do not slouch. While walking on the trail, strive to maintain good posture so that you won't get tired easily. To ensure this pack your Swiss Gear Backpack properly by spreading the weight evenly on both sides of the pack and packing the heaviest item at the bottom part of the bag.
  • Don't go beyond your capability. It is tempting to go and on when hiking but never overestimate yourself and your hiking abilities or you may find yourself in a lot of trouble.
  • Don't hike alone. It's always safe to hike in groups or to have a hiking partner. Hiking alone makes you more vulnerable to the many dangers in the wilderness.
  • Don't get sunburned. To protect yourself from getting a stinging sunburn, be sure to apply sunblock of spf 15 or higher 30 minutes before you go out into the sun. Wearing hats and sunglasses will also help a lot.

For many outdoor lovers, hiking can be such a glorious activity that they would it every day if only possible. Enjoy hiking!

Good tips. I've hiked before but I want to get into it more next summer. I'll definitely get a good walking stick. After a while, I did get really tired and used a big branch as a walking stick!
