You have planned for this trip for a long time and now that it is here, you and your family cannot help but get excited. From the camping destination to the camping activities to do—everything is all set. Spoiled food and upset stomach can surely ruin what was supposed to be a worthwhile camping vacation. To avoid this scenario, be sure to follow these pointers.

• Use two camping coolers

One camping cooler would be used for items that you would need more frequently like the drinks. The other cooler would be for the food. This is important because if you put all the items in the same cooler and you would open it frequently, the ice would easily melt. Keep the cooler lid closed to keep the food fresh.

• Pack the coolers properly

Fill both of the camping or backyard coolers with ice or frozen gel packs before packing the food. Be sure to consider the duration of the trip and the amount of food you will need. Transfer meat, poultry, and fish from the freezer straight to the cooler. Then fill up any empty spaces in between with ice or other non-perishable food to ensure that the cold air does not escape.

• Cook foods before leaving

It is a smart idea to cook meat and other perishable items before you leave the house. After this, you can store them in the cooler until they need to be reheated on stove or grill. This extends the life of the food and saves you a lot of cooking time, fuel, and coal.

• Store the cooler inside the car

Keep the cooler inside the car and not in the trunk. The air conditioning inside the car will help keep the cooler cool while the heat inside the trunk will easily cause the ice to melt. Not only will this make it easier for you to get drinks or snacks during the road trip, it will also help keep the food safe and fresh. Do not park the car in places under direct sunlight. Find a shady area as much as possible.

• Cover pots and pans while cooking

When cooking, make it a habit to cover the pots and pans at all times. Do not leave food exposed. This is to keep the food fresh and to avoid having insects, dust, and dirt go into the food.

• Don’t leave raw meat exposed

People often make the mistake of leaving raw meat, chicken, or fish out in the open to thaw. But this can cause bacteria to form and spoil the food. Always keep these foods covered.

• When in doubt, discard leftover

Leftover food can only be stored if there is still sufficient ice left. If not, better discard them than risk eating spoiled food. As they say, it is better safe than sorry.

Following the tips mentioned above will help keep your food safe and fresh. This will also help make your camping trip a fun and safe one.

Great tips for camping. Although I love tent camping,

I guess you might say I cheat. We use one good size cooler for drinks. For meat, milk and fridge stuff, I use a little dorm fridge for camping, it even has a little freezer inside. What can I say, I like the convenience of electricity.

Great hub and a great help for those who like rustic camping.

If you can and have room, taking food you have canned is a great way too. I love to go camping. We are planning a trip to Cape Cod next. Great hub.
