Definitely one of the best ways to spend the weekend or to unwind for a couple of days is to go on a camping trip. It's a good chance to bond with the whole family or catch up with good friends whom you've not seen for some time.

Not only is it less expensive than the usual vacation, it's also relaxing and calming in a way that only close contact with nature's best can provide you. But even though camping can be a gratifying experience, it can turn into a nightmare if not practiced with safety precautions.

To make sure that your trip is not only fun-filled but also a safe one, here are some safety guidelines you can follow:

1. Pick a safe campground. Don't camp in the first campground you see without doing some background check first. It's also a good idea to seek friends' and family's suggestions on which campsites are safe and nice. Also, seeing a number of people in the camping ground may seem safer compared to a deserted site.

2. Don't forget to pack your complete first aid kit as well as any medications that you and the people you're camping with are taking.

6. Discard any leftover food that you suspect to be spoiled.

7. Carry your own bottled water to ensure you and your family or friends of a safe drinking water. If in case you run out of it, be sure to check if the campsite's water source is safe to drink by asking the campground authorities. If you still suspect the water, boil it for several minutes or run it through a purifier or filter.

8. Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the stinging sensation of sunburn and insect repellent to keep mosquitoes from feasting on your skin.

9. Never at any circumstance cook inside the tent. 10. Avoid setting up a bonfire.

11. Use durable and safe lanterns like Coleman lanterns to light up the campsite. But don't use them inside the tent.

12. Put away any food or food baskets before you go to sleep so as not to attract bears or other animals.

13. If you intend to go swimming, be sure that you are familiar with the lake or stream. Make children and those who don't know how to

14. swim don on a life vest or floating device before plunging into the water.

15. Never go hiking alone.

16. Don't light up candles inside your tent.

Thanks for the tips. I have a Coleman rechargeable lantern and I love it. The bulb recently died and I thought it was just a regular fluorescent bulb but, it wasn't. Coleman has their own special bulb. I had to order a replacement from their website becasue I didn't think I would find it anywhere else. I recently saw they do carry them at Walmart. But Walmart charges $10. I bought 2 from Coleman's website for $5.
