Hiking along a forest path is the best eye opener for a scout, especially a tiger cub. It lets them open their eyes to a world that is almost devoid of human interference. It is a means of strengthening their bond with nature and with themselves. Like the Indians of old, this bond will give them the inner confidence they will need for the trail of life that lies ahead of them.

Let me give you some suggestions that will help your Tiger Cub complete his requirements to go to the next level with emphasis on increasing awareness in nature conservation.

Making My Family Special

For this category, we can go to the forest to pick up some exotic-looking leaves. Make sure you choose a newly shed leaf that still has a green color. When you get home, individually enclose the leaves in a piece of newspaper and then pile them all up then place a heavy book on top. Wait for a week or two and after such time you will see that the leaves have turned brown, but they will be flat, perfect for scrapbook decorating. The same method will also work for inflorescences. You might also want to get some sticks to go with your flowers and leaves.

While on the trail for leaves and such, you can tell your Tiger Cub about how people would collect butterflies and then pin and frame them for display. You can discuss why it is unethical to pin butterflies by telling them about how a species becomes endangered and extinct.

Where I Live

Aside from looking at a map of your town, you may also want to look at a map of a forest nearest to where you are. When you go to a library you can also borrow a book that has a natural history of that forest. Note the increase/decrease in the forest area. You can talk about some of the major factors that influenced the variation in the acreage of that forest.

When you visit the fire station, you may want to ask the firefighters how they stop a forest fire, or better yet, ask a forest ranger what they do during a forest fire.

You may also want to discuss the relationship between pollution in the air and the increasing rate of forest fires. As we are relating changes in global climate to forest fires, this will already be fulfilling a requirement for Let's Go Outdoors.

Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe

You may want to teach this while at a camp site so you can show real time what a Tiger Cub must do if they get lost. Survival skills like teaching him where to find edible fruits, nuts, and berries and path finding skills like learning to read a compass to locate your camping tents will also be very helpful. Talking about smoke signal as a means of communication will already fulfill a requirement for How I Tell It.

Whether a Tiger Cub or an Eagle Scout, helping to save the environment is a very important requirement and achievement. So increasing the awareness of children will help them keep this in mind when they become managers of big manufacturing companies
